Prior to presentingMorePurpose of this booklet series starting with “AP Computer Science 01 Java JDK with DOS” is to present “AP CS A” syllabus material using small length topics (units) suitable to be readable using e-readers such as Amazon.com Kindle. Prior to presenting Java programming and computer science principles, tutorials for downloading and installing Java Development Kit (JDK) have been presented.More and more young readers, such as high school students studying for an AP exam, are learning their skills by using e-reader books. To be useful to the young readers, these sets of small length booklets are provided with large number of worked out Java programming examples. By studying and practicing many example programs, students can learn and understand the Java programming skills faster with less effort. As a supplement to their AP CS text book or AP exam preparation book, students can purchase only the specific units of this book, depending upon the topic about which the student needs detailed explanations and example programs along with the detailed tutorial steps. Each of the units of this book provides detailed tutorial steps for a specific small sub-topic of the AP Computer Science exam. Further, we discuss only subset of the features of Java programming language, as specified in the “Appendix A : AP Computer Science Java Subset” of the College Board’s course description document “Computer Science A” effective from Fall 2010.To write a book that includes all the “AP CS A” features in detail requires considerable amount of time of the authors. And also requires considerable amount of time and efforts by the student(s) in practicing and learning these technical details. Therefore, this e-reader book will be developed in smaller size units (even though much tinier in size, are synonymous with volumes of a book) over a period of time and each unit will be made available on the amazon.com as soon as the unit material is completed. This book’s example programs are tested on Microsoft Windows 7 with Java 6 and 7 versions to compile and execute the Java programs. Open software tools Eclipse and NetBeans are used for editing, and calling the Java Development Kit (JDK) to compile, run, debug and re-run the Java programs. Also, Microsoft DOS command prompt compile and run instructions have been explained. In this booklet “AP Computer Science 01 Java JDK with DOS”, we have discussed:• AP CS goals from College Board’s syllabus• Edit, compile, run tools• Compile, run block diagram• Download, Install and Configure the JDK• Edit Java path variables• Creating a Java program using text editor• Compiling and Running from DOS
